ENVIRONMENTAL LESSONS FOR IMPOVERISHED YOUTH
How does climate change lead to more frequent and catasrophic hurricanes? How does water contribute to the formation of rocks and crystals? How does a Waterspout and tornado form? What are their dangers, and how do you protect yourself from one?
These are the questions that I answered during my lesson at Alameda Point Collaborative's Youth Education Center. Children & Youth staff report that these students are typically two grade levels behind academically and socially, so it felt very special to see the kid's interest in learning spark as we conducted hands-on lessons.
We started by creating a tornado inside a bottle! As we did this, I began to explain how climate change impacts the intensity and frequency of tornadoes and hurricanes worldwide. Hurricanes are fueled by the ocean, and the ocean temperatures is directly impacted by the ocean, therefore connecting these deadly natural disasters with climate change. As the Earth and Ocean gets hotter, it causes intensified evaporation and transfer of heat to the air. The warmer air can hold more moisture, and less wind shear, creating the perfect condition for tornadoes and hurricanes. Additionally, as the storms travel across warm oceans, they pull in more water vapor and heat. That means stronger wind, heavier rainfall and more flooding when the storms hit land.
I am thrilled to be a part of these children's climate stories.

Camp 510 was kind enough to allow me to host a lesson for their kids over the summer! As the Covid-19 pandemic was slowly coming to an end, I wanted to make learning fun again!
I conducted a hands-on lesson that's similar to the one I did at Alameda Point Collaborative. The kids were so excited to create tornadoes right in front of them. They even got a bit competitive as they wanted to see who could make the best tornado!
I also bought National Geographic Science geology kits with the money I earned from selling Jewelry. With these kits, they were able to excavate real crystals. I got to talk about how water plays a key role in eroding Earth's natural materials such as rock and silt. This made kids fall in love with the idea of water, and understand its importance.
